New California Law is Good Idea for Dealers Nationwide

for Auto Dealers on Tuesday, June 12, 2012 by Beth Williams

With the passage of a new law in California, effective July 1st, all California dealers who sell used cars must obtain a NMVTIS vehicle history report for every used car on their lot, and post a red warning label on the vehicle if a title brand or salvage history is found. While the new California law is aimed at protecting consumers from purchasing less than desirable vehicles without full disclosure, pulling a vehicle history from the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS) is a smart thing to do for all dealers – not just those in California.

In addition to the consumer report required in California, ADD offers a “corporate” version of the report for dealers that includes theft and lien information, which can help dealers protect themselves from taking a loss on a trade-in. By running a quick NMVTIS report, a dealer may discover undisclosed liens on a car, or that the title presented isn’t the most recent issued. Theft info can prevent the dealership being left with a stolen vehicle that turns a sale into a big loss.

To help the California dealers get ready to comply with the new requirement, an elite team of ADD dealer services experts are headed to California to visit dealerships all over the state. For those dealers, and dealers nationwide, ADD has added a “batch” report process that allows dealers to upload an inventory list and get reports for every car on their lot.

If you aren’t taking advantage of ADD’s easy, affordable NMVTIS vehicle history reports, check it out in your ADD account under the Search DMV123 tab. Look for the NMVTIS Report/ National Title Pointer in the drop down box and type in the VIN to see both to the corporate report with theft and lien data AND the expanded consumer report.
