Car Dealer Vehicle Fraud: It can happen to you

for Auto Dealers, Financial, Insurance, Mechanic / Body Shop, Repossession Agency and Wreckers on Tuesday, September 13, 2011 by Mike Samaan

Scenario # 1

It’s the end of the month and you are ten units short of your goal, but today is a busy day with a lot of customers and a hungry sales force. A couple on your lot just moved from South Carolina, is very interested in one of your pre-owned vehicles, and would like to trade in their car. They don’t want to haggle- they are willing to pay your sticker price, and don’t have any further requests. The couple tells the sales person that they owe $4,000.00 on the trade-in to a credit union in South Carolina. With a verified payoff of $4,000.00 and an ACV of $4,500.00 the gross profit is looking pretty good, so you quickly go forward with the deal.

Problem

Your sales department never verified the lienholder data using Auto Data Direct’s real-time vehicle data service (DMV123). Instead, your dealership relied on the word of the owner, and you find out too late that there was more than one lien holder– and the liens add up to more than $7,000.00. As a result, you just lost $3,000.00 and you do not have a clear title on the vehicle. And that lovely couple from South Carolina that traded in that good- looking vehicle? They gave you a bad address and are nowhere to be found.

Scenario #2

It’s late in the day and a woman drives onto your lot in a great car. You look out the showroom window and see an opportunity with real sales potential. If you can buy that car, it’s only a matter of taking it to the detail department for a quick clean-up, and then back onto the lot. A front row spot, and you’re sure it will be sold by the weekend. The woman quickly agrees to the $10,000 offer, but there’s a hitch- she doesn’t have the title with her. Thinking on your feet, you tell her “Not a problem,” then have her sign a Power of Attorney and a fill out a lost title application. Paperwork signed, you purchase the car.

Problem

One week later, a man shows up and tells you that the car you bought from the woman the previous week wasn’t hers to sell. The man explains that he and his girlfriend had a fight, to get even with him, his girlfriend sold his car to your dealership and left town. As the result of your enthusiasm to make a good deal, you never logged on to Auto Data Direct’s website and did a real-time Vehicle Database Search (DMV123) to verify the owner information. You are now a victim of vehicle fraud.
