Customer Service FAQs: Temporary Metal Plate Transfers

for Auto Dealers on Tuesday, December 28, 2010 by Erin Miller

How do I issue a Temporary Metal Plate Transfer? What if a customer decides not to purchase the vehicle after a completed transfer? Can you still print a temporary tag if the customer has a metal plate to transfer? Do you still have to do the transfer paperwork at the tag office? ADD’s wonderful customer service staff answers some common questions about ADDTag’s newest dealer tool.

Q: How do I use the ADD system to issue a Temporary Metal Plate Transfer?

Transferring a customer’s metal plate is an easy step-by-step process similar to ADD’s temporary tag system. To perform a temporary metal plate transfer, log into your ADD account and click on the ADDTAG tab, then click on the TAG TRANSFER sub-tab. You will need to enter the metal plate number you wish to transfer, the VIN number of the vehicle the tag is to be transferred to, and the driver license number of the customer associated with the metal plate. When you have completed the tag transfer process, the customer will be issued a temporary registration and is able to drive off the lot with their vehicle and insurance information associated with the newly purchased vehicle until the paperwork is processed at the tax collector’s office or the DMV within the standard 30-day time frame.

Q: What do I do if a customer decides not to purchase the vehicle after I

have already completed the tag transfer and printed out a temporary registration?

Temporary transfer transactions may only be voided on the day of issuance. If the deal falls through after the date of issuance, there will be an option to RESTORE the customer’s metal plate to the vehicle to which it was previously assigned. To restore a metal plate to the previous vehicle, simply log into your account, go to the ADDTAG tab, then click on TEMPTAG ARCHIVE. Once in the archive, find the transferred tag number. The tag number will be a hyperlink that will take you to the information page for the transaction. At the top of the screen, click the button that says RESTORE PLATE TO PREVIOUS OWNER. This will restore the tag to the previous the vehicle. It is important to note that transfer fee cannot be refunded as it is due to the state, but the restoration process is free.

Q: Can I still print my customer a temporary tag if they have a metal plate

to transfer?

If a customer wishes to transfer their metal plate to a newly purchased vehicle, you are obligated to perform the metal plate transfer and print out the temporarily transferred registration. In order to transfer a metal plate, the customer must have at least 30 days left on the vehicle registration and has the metal plate with them at the dealership.

Q: Do I still have to do my paperwork at the tag office?

Yes, you will still need to do all of the tag and title paperwork at the tax collector or tag office. Using the Tag Transfer option does not permanently transfer the plate. It will only assign a TEMPORARY transaction. Fees and taxes are still owed to the state, along with insurance information. YOU MUST still file your paperwork with the tag office within 30 days of deal completion.
