North Carolina 72-Hour NMVTIS Reporting Requirement Begins

for Salvage on Tuesday, December 17, 2013 by Auto Data Direct

The North Carolina Department of Transportation passed legislation in July that includes a new requirement for entities to report vehicles to NMVTIS within 72 hours of purchasing the vehicle.

Included in the legislation was a requirement that, within 72 hours of each day’s close of business, a North Carolina secondary metals recycler or salvage yard purchasing a motor vehicle must report the vehicle information to the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS). A secondary metals recycler or salvage yard may comply by reporting the salvage vehicle information to a third-party consolidator as long as the third-party consolidator reports the information to the NMVTIS in compliance with the provisions of the subsection.

NMVTIS reporting through your Auto Data Direct (ADD) account can help you meet these new state requirements.

  • ADD is an approved third-party consolidator, and records reported to ADD before 8:00 pm eastern each day will be transmitted to the NMVTIS database that evening.
  • Recyclers who use a yard management system to report vehicles automatically should contact their management system to ensure that the automated reporting will occur within the new 72-hour window.
