Updates to Alabama Unclaimed/Abandoned Vehicle Law

for Wreckers on Thursday, July 14, 2016 by Derek Phillips

Starting July 1st the state of Alabama is updating their towing regulations, requiring tow companies that handle abandoned vehicles to report the vehicle as “unclaimed” to the Department of Revenue (DOR). This report must be submitted within 5 calendar days after the vehicle has been determined as unclaimed, or storage fees may not be assessed.

Additionally, within 5 calendar days after a vehicle has been reported to the DOR a National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS) report must be obtained in order to determine the state in which the vehicle is titled. These reports are available through ADD, simply click on DMV123 and select the “National Title Pointer (NMVTIS) with Theft Check” and enter the VIN.

For more specific information on this legislation, refer to Legislative Act 2015-470 found on pages 13-14 HERE .
