As a result of the 2013 Florida legislative session, Florida towing companies, among other industries, face new NMVTIS reporting requirements when handling derelict, total loss, and salvage vehicles.

As of July 1, in Florida, when a towing company is applying for a Certificate of Destruction in lieu of a Certificate of Title, they must submit proof of reporting the vehicle to NMVTIS, along with the previously required affidavit.

Florida isn’t the only state to add these requirements, and ADD wants to make meeting them as easy as possible for its customers, which is why reporting a vehicle to NMVTIS is now completely free when done in conjunction with a NMVTIS vehicle history search (Title Pointer), or as a part of a full service DirectPost-Office (DPO) certified letter.

When an ADD customer runs a NMVTIS Vehicle History/Title Pointer to locate the current state of title as part of a Good Faith process, or to check theft status nationwide, there is now a button at the bottom of the record that says Report to NMVTIS. The button will open ADD’s NMVTIS reporting tools, with the VIN pre-populated in the form. If you’re not ready to report the vehicle at the time you pull the NMVTIS history, that’s OK, too. Reporting can still be done at no cost up to 90 days after the inquiry is run.

The same applies for NMVTIS reporting done through the DirectPost-Office certified letter tools. Once you create your notification letters, look for the Report to NMVTIS button at the bottom of your DPO manifest. The NMVTIS report is free of charge if a full service DPO letter has been created for that VIN within the last 90 days.

By federal regulation, all insurance carriers, salvage businesses, and towing companies who handle five or more total loss or salvage vehicles each year must report these vehicles to the NMVTIS database. As states implement additional reporting requirements, ADD will continue to making compliance as easy and as cost-effective as possible for its customers.
